Passing by Raja Ampat

by Dayyan Armstrong | April 18, 2026

West Papua, part of Indonesia, off the northwest tip of New Guinea. Raja Ampat translates to “Four Kings,” referring to the main islands—Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati, and Misool. It sits in the Coral Triangle and hosts the highest marine biodiversity on Earth

From the start—the moment of meeting a group for the first time at the start of a voyage—everyone is slightly unmoored, out of sorts from travel that can take days. Those first exchanges feel like lucid memories even as they slip past; a blur, almost out-of-body, cinematic. And because of that, they’re often the very moments most easily overlooked, and quietly forgotten.

An adventure, so vast, layered with the romance of exotisism, such as West Papua New Guinea, is unfathomable to comprehend in anticipation before you arrive. Above waterline is infindent tropical-like scenery, intoxicating with aroma. A swift look under water and you'll experience an ephemeral sight into a galaxy so close, yet, from another universe as our own.

Before we know it, we are intertwined by an adventure that only our group is seeing at that very moment. Together, we are kicked out of any routine we have during our ordinary life. Instead of driving the kids to school, we're boarding a zodiac with a mission to head up river in a jungle. Or gearing-up dive 20 meters below the surface to explore a foreign universe.

Walking through rivers to arrive at the other side can be used categorically or metaphorically. But here we are, plainly - walking through a river to arrive at the other side.

In advance of arriving in Raja Ampat, I couldn't get a sense of the scale - I unintentionally create comparisons based on places I've seen, things I know. There are 60 islands that surround the island of Tortola in the Caribbean, a place I have sailed hundreds of times during my life. Tortola itself isn't very large, about the size of Manhattan. Yet I have spent accumulative a year of my life sailing around this island exploring the surrounding archipelago.

But, West Papua is on one of the largest islands in the world. But how much bigger is it than Tortola? Seemingly each new anchorage brought unimaginable beauty, a tropical, lush wonderland on an unfathomable scale.

Day by day, we continued our journey, island after island, cove after cove. It was a time warp, of sorts. Beauty did not stop. Time didn't end. There were island villages scattered seldomly, and we got to go ashore and walk through them. But how big is West Papua?

Back aboard, we lounged, napped—steeped in a deliberate, almost medicinal laziness.

We gathered for every meal, and somehow, each one carried a quiet gravity. While one drifted off—half elsewhere—another would fix their gaze on the coastline, not quite searching for meaning, but making it, shaping it in real time. Then, without noticing, we would trade places. What looked, from the outside, like nothing at all—small, passing moments—became, in turn, something else entirely: a flicker of insight, a pulse of inspiration. Each of us witnessing it, then becoming it.

At the dining table, there was a kind of unspoken permission to share. A safety in saying feelings half-formed, in offering observations still unsure at the edges. Thoughts, feelings—set down between plates, shared, held, and left open.
